After the recent publicity campaign at our Christmas concerts, on posters and flyers, local radio and online media, we were hopeful that we might see one or two new recruits when the Surrey Hills Chamber Choir reconvened last week for our first rehearsal of 2024... but when seven new faces appeared we were absolutely thrilled!
Having taken time to welcome the newcomers and get to know them a bit, the evening kicked off with one of Debbie Walton's trademark warm-ups to blow away the Christmas cobwebs, open lungs and pipes, get voices placed and vowels shaped...
So that everyone was starting learning from the same place, we then launched into some of the new repertoire that we will be featuring this year, both in our Spring Concert on 28th April at St. Nicolas Church in Guildford, and when we compete in the Bournemouth Festival at Christchurch Priory on 8th June. Pieces ranging from the relative simplicity of The Turtle Dove by Vaughan-Williams and Come Sweet Death by J.S.Bach (arr. Rhonda Sandberg) to the altogether greater challenge of Poulenc's Vinea Mea Electa.
Many thanks to those who took the time to come along and see what we're about. We hope you enjoyed yourselves and will be even more thrilled if you decide to come back next week and carry on the good work you started.
If you saw our pre-Christmas campaign but didn't quite manage to make it last Wednesday, have no fear! Why not come along this week or next? There are still places available and we would love to meet you and introduce you to our style of choral music-making. Place and time are the same...
Wednesday evenings at 7.30pm, United Reformed Church, 83 Portsmouth Road, Guildford GU2 4BS.
If you're coming it's best to contact Debbie Walton (debbie@surreyhills-choirs.co.uk) beforehand so that she can give you all the details.
